Getting your NZ passport after citizenship
Fees, processing times, documents needed, and how to apply
When you can apply
You can apply for a New Zealand passport as soon as you have completed your citizenship ceremony. Once you take the oath or affirmation of allegiance and receive your citizenship certificate, you are a New Zealand citizen and immediately eligible for a passport.
There is no waiting period after the ceremony. Many new citizens begin their passport application the same day. If you have upcoming travel, plan ahead and allow time for passport processing after the ceremony.
Passport fees
Passport fees are set by the Department of Internal Affairs. These are separate from and in addition to the citizenship application fee.
| Passport type | Fee (NZD) | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| Adult passport (16 and over) | $199 | 10 years |
| Child passport (under 16) | $115 | 5 years |
| Urgent processing (adult) | $199 + urgent fee | 3 working days |
| Urgent processing (child) | $115 + urgent fee | 3 working days |
Fees are subject to change. Check the DIA website for current passport fees.
Processing time
Passport processing times depend on where you apply and whether you choose standard or urgent processing.
Standard processing (working days)
Urgent processing (working days)
- •Standard processing within NZ: approximately 10 working days
- •Urgent processing within NZ: 3 working days (additional fee applies)
- •Processing from overseas: may take longer depending on location
- •First-time applicants may need an identity verification appointment, which can add time
Documents needed
As a new citizen applying for your first NZ passport, you will need the following documents.
Citizenship certificate
The certificate you received at your citizenship ceremony. This is your primary proof of NZ citizenship for the passport application.
Current foreign passport
Your existing passport from your country of origin. This is used for identity verification purposes.
Passport photo
A recent passport-style photo meeting NZ passport specifications. You can get these taken at a pharmacy or photo shop, or use the DIA online photo tool.
Proof of identity
You may need additional identity documents such as a birth certificate or name change certificate if your name differs between documents.
Identity referee
First-time NZ passport applicants need an identity referee who is an NZ citizen and has known you for at least 12 months. They must not be a family member.
How to apply
You can apply for your NZ passport online or in person. The online process is recommended for most applicants.
Online application
Apply through the DIA passports website. You will need a RealMe verified identity. Upload your photo, fill in your details, and pay online. First-time applicants may need to attend a brief identity verification appointment at a DIA office or PostShop.
In-person application
Visit a DIA office or participating PostShop with your documents. Staff can help you complete the application form and take your photo. This option is useful if you have questions or complex circumstances.
From overseas
If you are overseas, you can apply through the nearest NZ embassy, high commission, or consulate. Processing times and fees may differ for overseas applications.
Passport validity and renewal
NZ passports have different validity periods depending on the holder's age.
| Holder | Validity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Adult (16 and over) | 10 years | Can be renewed online before expiry |
| Child (under 16) | 5 years | Shorter validity due to changing appearance |
The NZ passport provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 180 countries and territories, making it one of the most powerful passports globally. Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended travel dates.
Tips for new citizens
Apply early if you have travel planned
If you know your ceremony date and have upcoming travel, prepare your passport application in advance so you can submit it immediately after the ceremony. Allow at least 2 weeks for standard processing.
Line up your identity referee
Before your ceremony, ask an NZ citizen friend or colleague who has known you for at least 12 months to be your identity referee. They cannot be a family member.
Keep your citizenship certificate safe
Your citizenship certificate is an important document. Make certified copies and store the original securely. You will need it for the passport application and potentially for other official purposes.
Check if you need to update other documents
After getting your NZ passport, consider updating your details with your bank, employer, IRD, and any other organisations that hold your identity information.
Understand which passport to use when travelling
If you hold dual citizenship, enter and leave NZ on your NZ passport. Enter and leave your home country on that passport. For third countries, use whichever passport gives better visa-free access.
